CULPEPER, VA — Culpeper County’s Department of Economic Development marked Economic Development Week with a robust week-long celebration aimed at uplifting small businesses, entrepreneurs and the broader business community. From the relaunch of a community resource website to the return of one of the county’s most impactful shopping events, each day showcased a key pillar of Culpeper’s commitment to growing a resilient and inclusive local economy.
“Economic development is about more than numbers—it’s about creating opportunity, solving community challenges and strengthening our community for the future,” said Bryan Rothamel, Culpeper’s Director of Economic Development. “This week was a testament to the partnerships, innovation and dedication that define our department’s approach to economic growth.”
MONDAY: Website Refresh Launch
The week kicked off with the relaunch of the Be A Culpeper Local website, now redesigned to better serve local businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs. The refreshed site features a streamlined user experience and new resources, including a step-by-step guide that walks users through planning, launching and growing a business in Culpeper. From understanding local requirements to accessing training and workshop opportunities, the site equips business owners with tools to navigate every stage of their journey.
“The updated site reflects the needs of our community and makes it easier than ever for residents to support local businesses,” said Winona Pritts, Business Development Manager and program lead for Be A Culpeper Local. “It’s more than a website—it’s a toolkit for building community wealth.”
TUESDAY: Culpeper County Conference (C3)
On Tuesday, the County welcomed nearly 60 attendees to the Culpeper County Conference (C3), a half-day business summit featuring expert-led sessions on topics such as social media marketing, financial foundations, creating efficiencies in your business and—new this year—a panel discussion tailored specifically for home-based businesses. The event also featured an energizing keynote from Andy Gyurisin, Director of the Small Business Development Center at Laurel Ridge.
Attendees praised the thoughtful session topics, practical takeaways, and engaging format of the workshops.
WEDNESDAY: Business Appreciation Reception
Midweek, the Department hosted the Culpeper Business Appreciation Reception, welcoming over 30 guests for an evening of recognition and networking. The event celebrated the vital contributions of businesses across Culpeper County and offered a meaningful space for connection, collaboration, and community gratitude.
“This reception is a small way to say thank you to the business owners and teams who drive our economy forward,” said Rothamel. “Their success is our community’s success.”
THURSDAY: Childcare Luncheon
On Thursday, Economic Development staff attended and sponsored the Childcare Luncheon hosted by Foundation First, supporting the intersection of local economic vitality and access to childcare. The luncheon highlighted business-driven solutions to help working families and underscored the department’s commitment to collaborative problem-solving across sectors.
FRIDAY: BACL Week Announcement and Registration Launch
To close out the week, the department officially announced the return of Be A Culpeper Local Week, set for August 3–10, 2025, and launched early registration for participating businesses. Last year’s event generated over $40,000 in direct economic impact for Culpeper’s small business community, with 120 community members earning a limited-edition “Be A Culpeper Local” t-shirt for their participation.
“The excitement for this program grows every year because it’s built on genuine community pride,” said Pritts. “When residents choose to shop local, they’re not just making purchases—they’re investing in their neighbors, supporting dreams, and helping shape a vibrant future for Culpeper.”
From championing local entrepreneurs to strengthening connections among businesses and organizations, the Department of Economic Development’s work during Economic Development Week highlighted the long-term value of collaboration, creativity, and community spirit.
